The is no “scandal” in God burning his enemies forever.
THE SNARE (SCANDAL) OF THE CROSS
Earlier, we discussed the verse(s) which mentions THE SNARE OF THE CROSS. The word SNARE in the Greek New Testament is SKANDAL.
I have been arguing that Christ died for all. And that we are saved by His death and resurrection.
The chick has been trying to prove me wrong, saying we are not saved by His death and resurrection, that there must be something more. Something that has more power than the cross. And that something that saves according to her is “our faith”, “our obedience”, “our accepting”, “our receiving”… etc.
In a moment of weakness I tried to tried to agree with her that perhaps we could say “we are saved by our faith” but still insisting that “our faith” is a gift from God… we don’t generate it apart from God. Several times, Paul tells us that God gives us the faith that we have. But the chick knows that if that is true, that God grants us our faith, and we don’t self-generate our own faith, then those without faith, have no faith due to God not giving them faith… and that thought shakes her up.
She goes on and on about how the cross does not save apart from our giving it power with our own “belief”, “trust” “willingness” etc. She even makes a big to-do about this Lake of Fire thing as if the cross has no power to save and those who experience the Lake of Fire are beyond the reach of the cross.
After considering her message from many angles, I have conclude that there is NO SCANDAL in her theology.
What do I mean by that? Well, Paul tell us that THE CROSS (our message) IS A SKANDAL.
(See I Cor 1:22-23 … and GAL 5:11)
And there is no scandal in God punishing sinners in an endless hell if they don’t tow the line and do the “right thing”. That is to be totally expected.
The scandal is in God saving all, even those who don’t deserve it… who in fact deserve the opposite.
The scandal is in God saving those who turn away, reject, disbelieve, are faithless, etc.
I totally understand a “Christian” god who gives men a “chance”… but if men screw up this “chance” then it’s TOO LATE… and punishment must be dealt out. There is no SCANDAL there.
A god who operates by mere “chance” has to put his foot down and make sure sinners are punished for not getting with the picture. Totally understandable.
But Paul seems to have a different idea. And it’s a SCANDALOUS idea. That God would save all (I TIM 2:4, I TIM 4:10) justify all (ROM 5:18-19) reconcile all (COL 1:20) make all alive in Christ (I COR 15:22), etc.
Why would God do that? Why would God save all those who don’t deserve it, when I have tried so hard to be a good little boy… don’t I get special privileges for being good? It’s a scandal, I tell you.
In order to take the SNARE out of the evangel, you must limit the power of the cross and extend the punishments of the wrong-doers… then, it all makes sense.
Saving the rejectors, those who don’t “receive” our message, that makes no sense.
Thus, the cross is a snare, a scandal.
REFERENCE:
I COR 1: 22 since, in fact, Jews signs are requesting, and Greeks wisdom are seeking,
23 yet we are heralding Christ crucified, to Jews, indeed, a snare, yet to the nations stupidity,
GAL 5:11 Now I, brethren, if I am still heralding circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? Consequently the snare of the cross of Christ has been nullified.
